  • Rising fuel prices and GH₵1 Energy Sector Levy blamed for cost surge
  • New fares affect all public transport, including trotros, taxis, and long-distance buses

The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has confirmed that public transport fares will increase by 20% effective Friday, August 8, 2025.

This adjustment, according to GRTCC General Secretary Emmanuel Ohene-Yeboah, is driven by rising operational costs, including a recently imposed GH₵1 Energy Sector Levy and increased expenses related to fuel, spare parts, and vehicle maintenance.

Speaking in an interview on Monday, August 4, Mr. Ohene-Yeboah noted that although transport unions had previously reduced fares in May at the government’s request, they were now forced to raise them to keep businesses afloat.

“The cost of keeping vehicles on the road has skyrocketed. Without this fare adjustment, transport services will become unsustainable,” he stated.

The 20% fare hike will affect all types of public transport — including shared taxis, “trotro” (intra-city buses), long-distance coaches, and haulage trucks.

The GRTCC is urging passengers, drivers, and stakeholders to cooperate with the new pricing structure, assuring that a formal press release will be issued shortly.
