Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has called for lifetime stadium bans for supporters who chanted the name of late Liverpool forward Diogo Jota at his international team-mate Ruben Neves.
Jota died in a car crash at the age of 28 in July last year. The former Liverpool and Portugal forward was a close friend of Neves, with the pair having played together at Wolverhampton Wanderers and for the Portuguese national team.
Neves appeared to be targeted by supporters during Al-Hilal’s 6-0 victory over Al-Taawoun in the Saudi Pro League on Saturday, with fans repeatedly chanting Jota’s name in his direction.
Ronaldo, who plays for Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, condemned the behaviour and urged the league to take strong action against those responsible.
“The league must take action and punish this kind of fan behaviour,” Ronaldo wrote on social media.
“This is no longer football, and there have to be limits. People who behave like this should never be allowed to enter a stadium again.”
Ronaldo’s comments come amid renewed calls for respectful conduct from football supporters, particularly when incidents involve the memory of a player who died tragically.
