The Engineering Club of Afua Kobi Ampem Girls Senior High School has developed a multipurpose drone capable of supporting firefighting, intelligence gathering, deliveries and marine patrol operations.
According to the club, the drone can also be used for surveillance, border patrol and other security-related activities.
The project was led by the club’s lead engineer and tutor, Sir Ferdinand Sam, who revealed that the innovative aircraft was built entirely by the students as part of their Aerospace practicals.
Speaking on Wednesday, Sir Sam said the drone successfully completed its first test flight on the Suhum By-pass Road.
He explained that the maiden flight provided the students with valuable technical lessons, prompting the club to begin work on further upgrades to improve the drone’s performance and operational capabilities.
The drone has a wingspan of four metres, a length of 3.5 metres and a height of 1.4 metres, with a total weight of 19.5 kilogrammes.
Sir Sam said the students built the drone from scratch with the goal of developing practical technological solutions to everyday challenges in Ghana.
He stressed that the project highlights the enormous potential of Ghanaian students when they are given access to practical training, resources and support in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
The innovation is expected to further encourage students to pursue hands-on engineering and technology projects capable of addressing real-world challenges.
