Fenerbahce head coach Ismail Kartal has stunned the club by announcing his resignation shortly after the Turkish side’s 1-1 Champions League draw with Roma.
Kartal revealed his decision during his post-match press conference, bringing an abrupt end to his fourth spell in charge of the Istanbul club.
The 63-year-old said he does not expect to return to Fenerbahce again, despite his long-standing connection with the club as both a former player and coach.
Kartal returned for his fourth managerial stint in June 2026, with Fenerbahce preparing to compete in the Champions League for the first time in 18 years.
However, his departure comes after just one Champions League match and a mixed start to the domestic campaign. Fenerbahce currently sit ninth in the Turkish Super Lig after recording two wins and two defeats.
Reflecting on his brief return, Kartal thanked the players and club leadership for their support during his time in charge.
