A 57-year-old German tourist has died after being bitten by a snake during a snake-charming performance at a hotel in Hurghada, one of Egypt’s most popular Red Sea holiday destinations.
The incident reportedly happened in early April while the man was watching a live entertainment show involving snakes believed to be cobras.
According to police in southern Bavaria, Germany, the reptiles were being placed around the necks of audience members as part of the performance.
Authorities said the “snake charmer” then allowed one of the snakes to crawl into the tourist’s trousers, where it bit him on the leg.
Victim showed signs of poisoning
Police stated that the man immediately showed clear signs of poisoning and had to be resuscitated before being rushed to hospital.
Despite emergency efforts, he later died from the effects of the bite.
The victim, whose name has not been released, was from the Unterallgäu district in Bavaria and had been on holiday in Egypt with two relatives.
Investigation underway
German police and prosecutors have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death and are currently awaiting the results of toxicology tests.
When contacted by AFP, Egyptian authorities said they were not aware of the reported incident.
