President John Dramani Mahama has assured residents along Ghana’s eastern coastline of swift and sustained action following recent tidal waves that have caused significant damage.
During a visit to affected communities including Fuveme and Blekusu in the Volta Region, the President assessed the destruction and reaffirmed government’s commitment to addressing the crisis.
Coastal protection under WACA project
President Mahama explained that the impacted areas are part of the West Africa Coastal Areas Programme (WACA), a World Bank-supported initiative designed to provide long-term coastal protection.
He noted that previous interventions, including sea defence projects at Akplewo–Torkor, Keta, and Blekusu, have already been undertaken, with additional works ongoing.
The broader WACA programme—estimated at $150 million—is expected to extend protection to other vulnerable areas such as Ketu South and parts of Anloga through the construction of sea defence systems and groins.
Project progress resumes
According to the President, the project experienced delays in 2024 due to election-related factors, but has now resumed. Feasibility studies have been completed, and the project has advanced to the design stage.
He added that procurement processes will begin soon, paving the way for construction to commence.
Immediate relief measures
As part of short-term interventions, President Mahama announced plans to engage the Volta River Authority to undertake dredging works in the main estuary.
This, he said, will help reduce water pressure and mitigate flooding in the affected communities while longer-term solutions are being implemented.
The President reaffirmed government’s commitment to protecting coastal communities and minimizing the impact of future tidal wave incidents.
