The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced a major step forward in restoring Ghana’s power supply, confirming that two generating units at the Akosombo Dam are back in operation following the recent substation fire.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, April 27, 2026, the Minister provided an update on emergency repair works that were launched after the blaze disrupted power evacuation from the country’s largest hydroelectric facility.
He revealed that recovery efforts are progressing faster than expected, with the second unit successfully reconnected to the national grid shortly before his briefing.
“I am pleased to report that, through emergency technical interventions and sheer determination, the first generating unit was restored yesterday. This afternoon, I have also received confirmation that the second unit has been successfully synchronised, bringing the total to two units,” Mr. Jinapor stated.
The development is expected to significantly reduce the power shortages that have affected parts of the Ashanti, Central, and Tema regions over the past two days.
He assured the public that restoration works are ongoing, with efforts now focused on bringing the remaining generating units back online safely and swiftly.
A key highlight of his address was the commendation of engineers from the Volta River Authority (VRA) and GRIDCo, who have been working under difficult conditions at the dam site since the incident occurred.
He praised their resilience, describing their efforts as critical to stabilising the national grid.
Looking ahead, the Energy Minister expressed optimism that full restoration of Akosombo’s generating capacity will soon be achieved, which would end emergency load shedding and restore stable electricity supply nationwide.
