John Dramani Mahama has announced that passengers travelling through Kotoka International Airport will no longer be required to remove their shoes and belts during security screening starting in August this year.

According to the President, the decision forms part of a broader government effort to modernise aviation security and improve the overall travel experience for both domestic and international passengers using Ghana’s main international gateway.

He explained that new and upgraded security screening equipment is being installed at the airport to enhance detection capabilities while also reducing unnecessary inconvenience for travellers. The introduction of the technology is expected to allow passengers to move through security checks more efficiently without compromising safety standards.

President Mahama noted that the changes are aimed at aligning Ghana’s airport procedures with international best practices, where advanced screening systems reduce the need for manual checks such as removing footwear and belts.

He added that the reforms are also intended to reduce congestion at security checkpoints, shorten waiting times, and improve the overall efficiency of airport operations.

The new measures are expected to take effect from August, marking a significant shift in passenger screening procedures at the airport and forming part of ongoing upgrades to Ghana’s aviation infrastructure.
