Following directives from President John Dramani Mahama, Ghana has secured a $30 million grant from China to develop a state-of-the-art market in Aflao, fulfilling a major campaign promise made during the 2024 elections.
The agreement was formalized on July 7, 2025, at Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The signing was conducted by Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister representing the government and His Excellency Tong Defa, the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, on behalf of China.

This funding echoes a previous Chinese grant that helped build the impressive Kotokuraba Market in Cape Coast under the Mills/Mahama administration.
The new market in Aflao is poised to become a vital trade center, connecting the Ho and Lomé markets and revitalizing commerce in the border area, a known hub for West African trade.
Expected to stimulate economic growth, create employment, and improve living standards, the project will have far-reaching benefits for the Volta Region and its neighboring communities.
