The United States military has carried out targeted airstrikes in southern Iran near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, escalating tensions in the region despite ongoing peace negotiations and a fragile ceasefire.

According to U.S. officials, the strikes targeted missile launch sites and Iranian naval vessels allegedly attempting to deploy maritime mines in the busy energy corridor, which handles a significant share of global oil shipments.

U.S. Central Command confirmed the operation, describing it as a defensive action intended to protect American troops and military assets operating in the area.

The strikes reportedly took place near Bandar Abbas, a major port city that hosts an important Iranian naval base overlooking the Strait of Hormuz.

In a statement, U.S. Central Command said the operation was conducted in “self-defence” and stressed that the action does not end the temporary ceasefire that has been in place since April 8.

Military officials stated that the strikes were carefully targeted and not intended to broaden the conflict. U.S. forces, according to the Pentagon, acted in response to what they described as threats posed by Iranian missile systems, drones and small naval boats operating near American warships in the region.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed that explosions were heard in Bandar Abbas, followed by additional blasts near the city’s airport. Iranian air defence systems were reportedly activated shortly after the incident.

Iranian authorities also claimed they intercepted and destroyed a hostile drone flying over the Persian Gulf before the air defence response began.

State media in Iran reported that military and local officials are assessing the aftermath of the strikes, while witnesses also reported hearing explosions in nearby coastal areas including Sirik and Jask.

The latest military exchange has heightened concerns about stability in the Gulf region and raised fears of further disruptions to international energy supplies and ongoing diplomatic efforts.
