- The NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has suspended his North East “Thank You Tour” due to rising security concerns in Bawku and Binduri
- The decision follows a reported attack on a military escort convoy
- The two-day tour covering six constituencies has been postponed indefinitely
The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has suspended his planned “Thank You Tour” of the North East Region following growing security concerns triggered by recent violence in parts of Bawku and Binduri.
The decision, confirmed by a senior member of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), comes after consultations over the worsening security situation, including an attack on a military escort convoy by unidentified assailants in Binduri.
The two-day tour, which was set to begin on April 29, was expected to take Mr. Asiedu Nketiah through Yagaba, Walewale, and Nalerigu on the first day, before continuing on April 30 to Bunkpurugu, Yunyoo, and Chereponi.
Security agencies reportedly advised against the trip as a precautionary measure to protect the NDC Chairman, party supporters, and the general public.
“Anytime there are disturbances, there are spillover effects. To be safe, we have decided to avoid the trip and focus on finding a lasting solution to these issues,” a source explained, adding that other engagements remain ongoing.
Tour Suspension Disappoints Supporters
The “Thank You Tour” was part of post-election activities aimed at appreciating party supporters across the region for their loyalty and contributions.
The suspension has reportedly disappointed many supporters who had made preparations to welcome the NDC Chairman across the six constituencies.
Rising Tensions in Bawku Area
The Bawku enclave has experienced persistent security challenges in recent times, with the latest attack on military personnel further heightening tensions and prompting increased security vigilance across parts of the North East and Upper East regions.
Meanwhile, the NDC leadership has yet to announce a new date for the postponed tour.
Residents have been urged to remain calm as security agencies continue to monitor developments in the affected areas.
