Manchester United have reached an agreement with Atalanta to sign Brazilian midfielder Ederson in a deal worth £35 million, with a further £3.9 million potentially payable in performance-related add-ons.

The 26-year-old is expected to sign a four-year contract at Old Trafford, with the club holding an option to extend his stay by an additional year. A medical examination is still required before the transfer is finalized, though sources indicate the move should be completed in early July ahead of United’s pre-season preparations.

Ederson is set to become Manchester United’s first signing since Michael Carrick was appointed permanent head coach last month. The Brazilian arrives as part of a major midfield rebuild, with the club looking to strengthen the area following the departure of veteran midfielder Casemiro at the end of his contract.

Capable of playing in multiple central midfield roles, Ederson has impressed during his time in Serie A, making 180 appearances for Atalanta and contributing 16 goals across all competitions. He has also earned three senior caps for Brazil.

United’s recruitment drive is expected to continue throughout the summer, with the club targeting additional midfield reinforcements. West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson remain among the players being monitored.

Beyond midfield, the club are also exploring options on the left flank and in attack, while decisions are still being made regarding the goalkeeping department ahead of the new campaign.

The move reflects United’s increasingly data-driven recruitment strategy, overseen by minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and supported by the club’s revamped football operations team. Carrick has also played an active role in transfer planning since taking charge earlier this year.
