  • Regional party delegates set to visit Wontumi at Nsawam Medium Security Prison on Friday while urging supporters to maintain calm.

The Ashanti Regional branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has thrown its full support behind the party’s Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, and is demanding his immediate release.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at the conference hall of Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia’s office in Kumasi, the party described Wontumi’s detention as unfair and politically motivated.

Speaking on behalf of the regional executives, the First Vice Chairman and Acting Regional Chairman, Patrick Acheampong, argued that Chairman Wontumi had been treated unjustly, alleging that some members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) accused of engaging in illegal mining activities had not faced similar legal action.

“We will spit red saliva instead of white if they push us further,” Mr. Acheampong declared, warning against what he described as the continued persecution of the party’s regional chairman.

He further stated, “Chairman Wontumi is the last person they will arrest. Never again will this happen.”

Mr. Acheampong announced that the Ashanti Regional executives, together with party supporters, will embark on a solidarity visit to Chairman Wontumi at Nsawam Prisons on Friday to demonstrate their unwavering support.

He, however, appealed to party faithful to remain calm and avoid any acts that could disrupt public peace, assuring them that the national leadership of the NPP is working tirelessly to secure Chairman Wontumi’s release.
