The National Labour Commission (NLC) has cautioned that increasing labour disputes and workplace unrest could negatively impact Ghana’s attractiveness to investors, warning that industrial instability may discourage long-term investment.

Stakeholders have been urged to strengthen dialogue and adopt practical labour relations strategies that promote stability, productivity, and a predictable business environment capable of attracting sustainable investment.

Speaking at the 2026 Chartered Institute of Human Resource Management Ghana Conference in Accra, Deputy Chairperson of the NLC, Rose Karikari Anang, stressed that industrial harmony plays a critical role in shaping investor decisions.

According to her, investors closely assess labour market conditions and workplace stability before committing resources to a country.

She noted that recurring strikes across key sectors of the economy send worrying signals to potential investors, who are increasingly comparing Ghana’s labour environment with those of competing destinations.

Madam Anang expressed concern that frequent industrial actions involving public sector workers, university staff, and teacher unions could undermine Ghana’s competitiveness and weaken confidence in the country’s investment climate.

She emphasized that labour stability should be viewed not only as a workplace issue but also as a significant economic factor that influences growth and development.

The NLC official further called on all stakeholders to adopt a collaborative approach to labour relations and focus on the broader national interest.

She urged Ghana to align its labour practices with global standards while implementing practical reforms that respond to the evolving nature of work.

The conference, held under the theme “Advancing Human Resource Excellence in Ghana: Leadership, Technology and Governance,” brought together human resource professionals, policymakers, and industry leaders to discuss emerging trends and challenges in the world of work.
