Traders in the Ashanti Region say sales of Fugu and Ghana jerseys have declined months after both items recorded increased patronage following separate national campaigns.

Lawson News conducted a vox pop with traders who sell Fugu and Ghana jerseys to assess the impact of the government’s National Fugu Day initiative and the influence of the Black Stars’ participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the sale of Ghana jerseys.

The Government of Ghana officially declared every Wednesday as National Fugu Day on February 10, 2026.

The declaration was issued by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts and signed by the Minister, Ablah Dzifa Gomashie, under the administration of President John Dramani Mahama.

Fugu sellers told Lawson News that demand for the traditional smock increased significantly during the first few months after the initiative was introduced.

However, they said sales have since declined as many people no longer observe the Wednesday initiative.

Some traders appealed to the government to expand the campaign by promoting all regional traditional attires instead of focusing solely on Fugu.

Meanwhile, traders dealing in Ghana jerseys said patronage has also reduced following the Black Stars’ elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Despite the decline, the majority of the traders said Ghana jerseys are currently selling better than Fugu.
