Supreme Court nominee Justice Senyo Dzamefe has unveiled bold reforms aimed at transforming Ghana’s judicial system by introducing firm deadlines to speed up case resolutions.

Amid rising public frustration over lengthy court delays—where some cases linger for years—Justice Dzamefe recommends that criminal cases be concluded within three months and civil cases within six.

During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on June 16, Justice Dzamefe highlighted the urgent need to tackle slow court processes. He argued that setting clear time limits would not only enhance efficiency but also restore public trust in the justice system.

Beyond timelines, he emphasized investing in judicial infrastructure and human resources, pointing out that boosting staff welfare and capacity is key to improving productivity. Justice Dzamefe also called for expanding the number of courts to ease caseload pressures.

Additionally, he stressed modernizing the judiciary through technology—advocating for AI, voice recording, transcription tools, and virtual courtrooms to replace outdated manual methods.

“The era of long handwriting is over,” he said, urging the system to embrace innovation to keep pace with the times.

Justice Dzamefe’s comprehensive approach promises a faster, fairer, and more modern court system for Ghana.
