The Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, has moved to ease tensions following a public controversy involving the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Dr. Mary Awusi, saying he holds no resentment over the incident.
The disagreement arose after Dr. Awusi responded strongly to environmental concerns raised by the church leader regarding illegal mining (galamsey), sparking public backlash.
In an effort to calm the situation, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah issued an apology on behalf of Dr. Awusi during her birthday thanksgiving service at the Pentecost International Worship Centre (PIWC), Trasacco, on Sunday, April 26, describing her remarks as a “slip” and urging restraint.
Speaking on the matter, Apostle Nyamekye stressed that he has no intention of escalating the issue, adding that the controversy has unexpectedly increased public attention on the church.
“As for this lady, she has made me more popular. People like that I don’t think about because she has made my church and myself more popular,” he said.
He further noted that differences in opinion are normal in public discourse and should not be allowed to create lasting conflict.
“If I held anything against her, I would have spoken about it at length. I think we all have our opinions on issues, so let’s forget about this issue,” he added.
