A 55-year-old transport operator, Hamisu Ibrahim, has been granted bail in the sum of GH¢50,000 by the Asokwa Circuit Court after being charged with allegedly abetting a crime involving threats against the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU).

The accused is facing charges under Sections 20(1) and 74 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), following allegations that he contracted individuals to intimidate and threaten the regional chairman, Sumaila Boakye Mohammed.

Presenting the facts before the court, prosecutor ASP Stephen Ofori said the case stems from an ongoing dispute between the complainant and some members of the GPRTU, including Hamisu Ibrahim. The disagreement has reportedly resulted in a civil case currently before the High Court in Kumasi.

According to the prosecution, the complainant reported to the Ashanti Regional Criminal Investigations Department that he had been subjected to harassment and intimidation.

Police investigations revealed that on March 27, 2026, while attending proceedings at the court, the complainant allegedly spotted Ibrahim in the company of four unidentified men.

The prosecution further stated that on April 1, 2026, one of the men, identified as Mubarak Suleman, allegedly approached the complainant and disclosed that he and three others had been hired by Ibrahim to threaten him into withdrawing the pending civil suit.

According to the facts presented in court, Suleman claimed the group did not carry out the alleged plan because the complainant remained within the court premises.

Following the complaint, police arrested Ibrahim for questioning. In a caution statement made in the presence of an independent witness, the accused reportedly admitted engaging Suleman and the three others.

However, Ibrahim denied hiring the men to intimidate the GPRTU chairman, insisting that they had been engaged to provide surety for another GPRTU member.

Presiding judge Her Honour Vida Achia Yeboah granted the accused bail on Monday, June 1, 2026, in the sum of GH¢50,000 with two sureties.

The court further ordered the accused and his sureties to deposit their identification cards with the court, while Ibrahim is required to report to the police twice every month.

The case has been adjourned to June 23, 2026, for further hearing.
