The Bono Regional Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service has opened investigations into the alleged assault and unlawful detention of a 16-year-old boy at Asufufu in the Sunyani East Municipality.
According to a statement from the Bono Regional Police Command dated Thursday, June 25, 2026, officers received a distress call on June 23 reporting that the teenager had been beaten and locked inside a room on church premises over allegations of theft.
The suspect, 39-year-old Rebecca Kumi, founder of the Overcomers Church, is alleged to have assaulted and detained the boy for about five days after accusing him of stealing money, including US dollars, and a Samsung mobile phone.

Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit said officers found the victim locked in a room upon arrival, wearing only red shorts and partially covered with a cloth. He reportedly had visible injuries, including marks on his right shoulder and swelling with dark discoloration around both eyes.
Preliminary investigations indicate the boy was allegedly beaten with a stick and slapped in the eyes. However, he denied the allegations, stating that he had lived with the suspect since 2024 and had never stolen from her.
The boy is currently receiving treatment at the Sunyani Municipal Hospital.
Police further stated that the suspect admitted to the offence during interrogation in the presence of her lawyer and is expected to be arraigned before court soon.
Authorities praised a Good Samaritan who reported the incident and encouraged the public to continue sharing information to help protect vulnerable persons.
