Former England captain Wayne Rooney believes Kobbie Mainoo should be included in the starting lineup ahead of Elliot Anderson for England’s World Cup last-32 clash with DR Congo on Wednesday.

Mainoo has yet to feature at this year’s tournament despite returning to the England squad after rebuilding his place at Manchester United under manager Michael Carrick. The 21-year-old had fallen out of favour under former United boss Ruben Amorim and has not made a competitive appearance for England since September 2024. Although he played in England’s last four friendly matches, he remained an unused substitute throughout the group stage.

Meanwhile, Anderson started all three of England’s Group L matches and is reportedly close to completing a club-record £116 million move from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City.

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, Rooney said he would deploy Declan Rice as the holding midfielder, with Mainoo and Jude Bellingham playing ahead of him. He praised Mainoo’s composure in tight spaces, quick footwork, and passing ability, describing him as the midfielder best suited to unlock difficult situations against DR Congo.
