The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has announced that the State Transport Company (STC) will receive 140 new buses within the next two months as part of government efforts to strengthen public transportation and ease the growing pressure on commuters nationwide.

He explained that the move forms part of a broader strategy to improve mobility, expand transport capacity, and address persistent challenges affecting both urban and intercity travel.

The announcement comes amid ongoing concerns from the public over inadequate transport services, including overcrowding, delays, and limited availability of reliable long-distance transport options.

Speaking in an interview on Monday, June 8, the Minister said the government is committed to expanding the national transport fleet to meet rising demand.

He also addressed concerns about the deployment of the 100 Metro Mass Transit (MMT) buses recently commissioned, noting that additional investments are underway beyond that initiative.

“We know the difficulties that we are experiencing with transportation, but we are very certain that the next 100 MMT buses will come in within the next two months, and STC will also have 140 buses, and we will be able to have more high-occupancy buses,” he said.

According to him, the combined rollout of new buses under STC and Metro Mass Transit is expected to significantly boost transport capacity, improve connectivity between major cities and towns, and reduce pressure on existing services.

The Transport Minister added that the expansion forms part of a long-term plan to modernise Ghana’s public transport system and enhance convenience for commuters across the country.
