  • He faces charges of offensive conduct and publication of false news

The Accra High Court has granted bail to the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe Abronye, in the sum of GH¢100,000 with two sureties following his arrest and detention by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) on May 13.

As part of the bail conditions, his travel documents have been seized, preventing him from leaving the country while investigations continue.

The development follows proceedings on Wednesday, May 20, when the court adjourned the case after the prosecution requested additional time to file its response to the bail application.

Abronye is facing two charges: offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace and publication of false news.

His lawyer, Daniel Amartey Addo, led by former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame, opposed the prosecution’s request for delay, arguing that the Republic had already been served with the application on May 14, 2026.

However, Assistant State Attorney Grace Delali Tali stated that although service was effected on May 14, the period amounted to three clear days rather than six, adding that the prosecution needed time to consult investigators and prepare its response.

Ruling on the matter, the court held that it had considered the prosecution’s request and granted it in the interest of justice while balancing the rights of the accused.

The case has drawn significant political attention given Abronye’s prominence as a vocal regional executive of the NPP.
