Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has defended the proposed establishment of regional and district tribunals, insisting that the initiative is intended to improve the delivery of justice and not to revive the excesses associated with tribunals in the past.

Speaking after Parliament debated the Tribunal Bill, 2026, Dr. Ayine said the proposed tribunals would operate under the supervision of the Judicial Council, which would ensure they function in accordance with the Constitution and established judicial standards.

According to him, safeguards have been built into the proposed system to prevent abuses. He explained that decentralized tribunal oversight committees would be established to monitor the work of tribunals across the country and report any instances of misconduct or abuse to the Judicial Council for appropriate action by the Chief Justice.

Dr. Ayine stressed that the tribunals would be independent and non-partisan, serving all Ghanaians equally regardless of political affiliation. He said their primary mandate would be to ensure the fair, transparent, and efficient administration of justice in accordance with the law.

The Attorney-General made the remarks during a press briefing after Parliament concluded debate on the Tribunal Bill, 2026.
