A devastating accident at an illegal mining (galamsey) site in Dansame, Assin North District of the Central Region, has claimed the lives of two people, while another victim remains in critical condition after a pit collapse.
The incident occurred on Thursday, April 23, in the afternoon when eight miners were working in a newly dug pit. According to reports, the walls of the pit suddenly gave way, burying three of the workers under debris and loose soil.
Residents and fellow miners quickly rushed to the scene in a desperate rescue attempt, but their efforts were hampered by the unstable ground and the depth of the collapse. After several minutes, all three trapped victims were pulled from the rubble.
Unfortunately, a 22-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man were pronounced dead, while the third victim was rushed to a nearby health facility in very critical condition and is currently receiving emergency care.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the New Edubiase Government Hospital morgue for preservation.
Police have launched investigations into the incident, while officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) are expected to visit the site to assess safety concerns.
Assin North NADMO Director, Edward Fireson, confirmed the tragedy and noted that intensified efforts are being made to curb illegal mining activities in the area.
