GPRTU, GRTCC Freeze Transport Fares as 2026 Review Continues
Transport operators say passengers should continue paying existing approved fares while consultations with the Ministry of Transport on a possible adjustment are ongoing.

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have assured the public that approved public transport fares remain unchanged as consultations on a possible fare adjustment continue.
In a joint statement issued on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, the two transport bodies said no decision had been taken to increase fares, despite an earlier proposal submitted to the Ministry of Transport seeking an upward adjustment.
The GPRTU and GRTCC began discussions with the Ministry of Transport on Tuesday as part of the review of public transport fares for the 2026 fare window.
Following the engagement, a joint team made up of representatives from the Ministry, GPRTU and GRTCC has been formed to assess the various cost components before any decision is reached.
According to the unions, the review is aimed at ensuring that any eventual fare adjustment is fair and reflects the interests of both transport operators and passengers.
They said the outcome of the consultations would be communicated to the public once the review process is completed.
In the meantime, the GPRTU and GRTCC have directed their members, including drivers, station masters and transport owners, to continue charging the existing approved fares across the country until further notice.
The unions have also appealed to passengers and transport operators to remain calm and cooperate with one another while the review is ongoing.
