Newcastle United Manager Eddie Howe Addresses England Manager Search

- Bullingham stated that they interviewed around 10 candidates
- The FA has opted not to comment on Howe's statements
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has revealed that he was not approached by the Football Association (FA) during their recent search for a new England manager.
FA chief executive Mark Bullingham stated that they interviewed around 10 candidates, including some English options, before ultimately appointing former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel.
Howe, one of only three English managers in the Premier League, confirmed on Friday that he was not part of those discussions. When asked about being interviewed for the England position, he responded: “I was not. There was no contact from the FA.”
Regarding whether this omission concerned him, Howe stated, “England have to do what is right for them, and only they know the processes they have undertaken and the decisions they have made. I am not one to analyze that.”
He emphasized his commitment to Newcastle, saying, “My focus is on Newcastle and winning games. It’s challenging enough to do that when you are 100% focused, and I will always maintain that level in my work. If you lower your standards, the job becomes impossible, and I haven’t allowed myself to do that at any stage.”
The FA has opted not to comment on Howe’s statements.
Tuchel’s appointment, confirmed on Wednesday, marks him as the third non-Englishman to lead the Three Lions. Howe expressed a preference for an English coach in the role but praised Tuchel’s capabilities, noting that he had shadowed him for a few days during his time at Chelsea and learned a great deal from the coach who led the Blues to a Champions League title in 2021.
