Mbappe: This Could Be the Year I Finally Win the Ballon d’Or

French forward believes his record-breaking World Cup run and prolific form could strengthen his case for the prestigious award.

Story Highlights
  • Mbappe scored 42 goals last season
  • He won the World Cup Golden Boot
  • Real Madrid star targets first Ballon d’Or

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe believes the current year could present his strongest opportunity yet to win the Ballon d’Or, the prestigious individual award for the world’s best footballer.

The 27-year-old enjoyed an impressive individual campaign last season, scoring 42 goals in 44 appearances for Real Madrid. However, his efforts did not result in a major trophy for the Spanish giants.

Mbappe also made his mark at the World Cup, winning the Golden Boot after scoring 10 goals. His overall World Cup tally has now reached a record 22 goals, although France finished fourth in the tournament.

Speaking about his Ballon d’Or chances, Mbappe acknowledged that playing for Real Madrid naturally places him among the leading contenders for the award.

“When you play for Real Madrid, the best club in the world, people associate you with this award,” he said.

Mbappe added that his performances in major competitions could strengthen his case, while stressing that the final decision rests with the voters.

He said: “Of course I’ve made history in the most important competition. Maybe it’s a good year for this, but people can vote according to what they think.”

The French star remains confident in his own ability and believes he can be regarded as the best player in the world, while accepting that opinions will differ.

“I always think I’m the best [player in the world], but everyone has their own opinion,” Mbappe said.

With another season underway at Real Madrid, Mbappe will be hoping his goals and performances can finally earn him the individual honour that has so far eluded him.
