Sam George Commends MTN Ghana’s Role in Telecom Growth at 30th Anniversary Celebration

The Communications Minister says Ghana’s telecom infrastructure must drive the next phase of digital transformation.

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has praised the growth of Ghana’s telecommunications industry while reaffirming government support for digital transformation and innovation.

Speaking at the 30th anniversary celebration of MTN Ghana in Accra, the minister described the occasion as a milestone not only for MTN Ghana but for the entire telecommunications sector.

He noted that Ghana’s telecom industry has experienced significant transformation since the early 1990s, evolving from a country with limited fixed telephone lines into a modern, mobile-driven and data-focused digital ecosystem serving more than 40 million subscriptions.

According to him, the progress achieved over the years was the result of collective efforts by engineers, technical teams, sales personnel, regulators, internet service providers, tower companies and thousands of businesses supporting the industry.

The minister also acknowledged the role played by regulatory institutions such as the National Communications Authority and the National Information Technology Agency, as well as successive governments that introduced reforms and policies to encourage investment and digital expansion.

He paid tribute to John Dramani Mahama for his contribution to the development of Ghana’s telecommunications sector, highlighting his previous role as Minister for Communications and first Board Chairman of the National Communications Authority.

Samuel Nartey George stated that Ghana must continue to move quickly in adapting to technological advancements, particularly in areas such as artificial intelligence and digital innovation.

Referring to the recent launch of Ghana’s National AI Strategy, he stressed the importance of using telecommunications infrastructure as the foundation for future growth in sectors including fintech, e-health, e-agriculture and artificial intelligence.

He further assured MTN Ghana of government’s commitment to maintaining an enabling environment that promotes investment, competition and digital inclusion.

The minister said the next phase of Ghana’s digital transformation should focus not only on connectivity but also on creating jobs, improving education, expanding healthcare access and increasing opportunities for young people.

He congratulated MTN Ghana on reaching the milestone and encouraged continued collaboration between government and industry players to drive Ghana’s digital future.
