Eight individuals have been arrested in a well-coordinated anti-drug operation carried out by the Northern Regional Special Operations Team, popularly known as “Red Maria,” in parts of the Tamale Metropolis and nearby communities.
The exercise, led by Chief Inspector Abu Issahaku and involving 44 officers, is part of intensified efforts by the Ghana Police Service to curb drug-related activities across the Northern Region.
According to police sources, the operation began at Zogbeli, where four suspects were picked up. The team subsequently moved to Kukuo, arresting two more persons, before extending the intelligence-led swoop to Savelugu, where another suspect was taken into custody.
In all, eight suspects—aged between 16 and 25—are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
Officers also retrieved 40 wraps of a substance believed to be Indian hemp during the exercise. However, a search conducted in the room of one suspect arrested in Savelugu yielded no illegal substances, though investigations into his involvement are still ongoing.
Police say all suspects remain under interrogation as efforts continue to dismantle drug networks operating in the region.
