Major Roads Under Big Push To Be Tolled After Completion – Agbodza

Roads and Highways Minister Governs Kwame Agbodza has announced that major roads being developed under the government’s Big Push programme will be subjected to toll charges once completed and opened to motorists.
He said the planned Accra-Kumasi Expressway will also operate a tolling system, although motorists who do not wish to pay will have the option of using alternative routes.
Speaking at the 2026 Transport Sector Review in Ho, Mr Agbodza said the government has re-enacted the Road Fund as part of efforts to secure sustainable financing for road maintenance across the country.
He explained that government is also taking steps to modernise revenue mobilisation in the road sector through technology.
According to him, Parliament approved a 20-year public-private partnership concession in July 2026, paving the way for the introduction of a multi-lane, free-flow electronic tolling system.
Mr Agbodza said the electronic tolling system would be deployed on public roads that have been improved, including major interchanges across the country.
He also called for measures to restrict certain heavy-duty vehicles from using selected public roads, arguing that such vehicles contribute significantly to the premature deterioration of road infrastructure.
The Minister further disclosed that contractors are returning to some existing Accra-Kumasi bypass projects, with work expected to resume fully in the coming weeks.
