The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly criticised the government’s handling of recent flooding in parts of Accra, describing its response as confused, poorly coordinated and ineffective.

In a statement issued on June 29, 2026, and signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the opposition party expressed solidarity with residents affected by floods in several communities, including along the N1 Highway, Apenkwa, Achimota, Kaneshie, Weija, Spintex, Darkuman Junction and the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange.

The party argued that the recurring flooding situation reflects weak governance and a failure to implement lasting solutions, despite repeated incidents over the years.

According to the NPP, the current structure for managing flood response is fragmented, with responsibilities shared between the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources. It claims this overlap has created confusion and weakened coordination during emergencies.

The opposition party also questioned the involvement of a Deputy Chief of Staff in coordinating flood response efforts, describing it as an arrangement that undermines clear lines of authority in emergency management.

The NPP further alleged that several announced flood mitigation measures have either not been implemented or have been poorly executed, while funding constraints are also affecting key interventions.

It also criticised comments attributed to President John Dramani Mahama at a town hall meeting abroad, where he reportedly suggested that human behaviour contributes to flooding. The party described the remarks as unfair to affected citizens.

The statement rejected what it called attempts to shift responsibility onto residents, insisting that government must take full accountability for flood control systems and their effectiveness.

The NPP is calling for a complete review of the country’s flood management structure, including the consolidation of responsibilities under a single ministry, the appointment of a clearly mandated lead authority, and greater transparency on the activities and spending of the anti-flood task force.

It also urged closer collaboration with local assemblies and technical experts to address sanitation, land use and drainage challenges contributing to the recurring floods.

The statement concluded with the party reaffirming its solidarity with affected families while pledging to continue holding government accountable over its flood response.
