The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has commenced the registration of traders affected by the recent fire at the Odawna Rubber Market as part of efforts to facilitate relief and support for victims.

Officials overseeing the exercise said the registration is intended to establish the exact number of affected persons and ensure that only genuine victims benefit from any assistance.

According to the team, the data collected will be cross-checked with records from the market traders’ association to verify the identities of those registered before any relief is distributed.

However, NADMO officials disclosed that the exercise has been slowed by attempts by some individuals to register more than once.

As of the latest update, 137 affected traders had been successfully registered.

Meanwhile, personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service have advised traders not to resume business operations until investigations into the cause of the fire have been completed.

A meeting has been scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday between officials of NADMO, the Ghana National Fire Service and leaders of the traders’ association to discuss safety protocols and measures to prevent future fire outbreaks at the market.

An executive member of the traders’ association, Nana Obeng Marfo, also appealed to affected traders to avoid double registration, warning that it could undermine the fairness and credibility of the relief process.

He assured traders that the association would work closely with NADMO to ensure that only genuinely affected victims are captured during the registration exercise.

The recent fire caused extensive damage to the Odawna Rubber Market, destroying goods and leaving many traders counting their losses as authorities continue investigations and recovery efforts.
