  • IES demands urgent technical assessment by GRIDCo
  • Institute calls for transparency over power system challenges.

The Institute for Energy Security (IES) has raised concerns over Ghana’s power stability following three nationwide blackouts in less than a month.

The latest outage occurred around 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 20, after a major fault on the Akosombo-Volta transmission line, according to the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo).

The IES described the repeated outages as a “cause for worry” and urged GRIDCo to conduct an immediate technical assessment and make its findings public.

The Institute also recalled a nationwide blackout on July 29, which occurred after several generating plants tripped across the national power system.

According to the IES, GRIDCo promised to investigate the July incident, but three weeks later, no report has been made public.

The energy think tank said the latest blackout has heightened concerns about the reliability and resilience of Ghana’s national grid, particularly as electricity demand continues to increase.

IES demands transparency

The IES has called on GRIDCo to restore power fully to all affected areas and conduct a comprehensive assessment of the latest incident.

It also wants GRIDCo to be transparent about the challenges facing the national power system so that Ghanaians are properly informed.

The Institute further called for urgent short-term measures and long-term investments to strengthen the national grid and prevent recurring nationwide outages.

According to the IES, the repeated blackouts should serve as a wake-up call for urgent action to identify and address vulnerabilities within Ghana’s electricity network.
