Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo Resigns from Council of State
Sources say the former Chief Justice withdrew from Council meetings after abstaining in the Gertrude Torkornoo removal proceedings

- Sophia Akuffo has reportedly resigned from the Council of State
- She was the only member to abstain in the Gertrude Torkornoo vote
- Neither the Presidency nor the Council has officially confirmed her resignation
Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has reportedly resigned from Ghana’s Council of State.
While the exact circumstances surrounding her resignation remain unclear, sources suggest that Justice Akuffo stopped attending Council meetings after the body’s involvement in the proceedings concerning the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. She is also said to have formally tendered her resignation toward the end of 2025.
Justice Akuffo served as Ghana’s Chief Justice from 2017 to 2020 and has since remained an influential figure in the country’s judicial landscape.

The Council of State, a constitutional advisory body, provides counsel to the President on matters of governance and national policy. Its membership comprises elected and appointed representatives from across the country.
In April 2025, the Council voted on whether a prima facie case had been established against then Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. Of the 31 members, 30 voted in favour of the decision, while Justice Akuffo was the sole member who abstained. She did not publicly state the reasons behind her decision.
Her reported resignation has yet to receive official confirmation from either the Council of State or the Office of the President.
