Five Akosombo Power Units Restored as Electricity Supply Stabilisation Accelerates

The Energy Ministry says the restoration of five out of six generating units at the Akosombo Hydroelectric Plant marks a key recovery milestone

Story Highlights
  • Five of six Akosombo generating units have been restored and are now feeding the national grid
  • The Energy Minister says the fifth unit has been successfully commissioned after recent fire-related disruptions
  • Work is ongoing to restore the final unit to achieve full power generation capacity

Ghana’s power restoration efforts are making steady progress, with five out of the six generating units at the Akosombo Hydroelectric Plant now back in operation and supplying electricity to the national grid.

Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor announced that the fifth unit has been successfully brought online and is functioning efficiently, marking a key milestone in the recovery process.

He explained that the commissioning was carried out smoothly, crediting the strong coordination between engineers and technical teams working to restore full operations at the facility.

This progress follows a recent fire incident that damaged the plant’s substation control room, disrupting power distribution and forcing emergency load shedding in several parts of the country.

The outage affected households and businesses across regions including Greater Accra, Ashanti, Central, and Tema.

With five units now active, the Energy Ministry says the system has reached a crucial midpoint in its recovery, which is expected to ease pressure on electricity supply nationwide.

Officials report that the added generation capacity is already helping to improve stability and reduce outages in affected areas.

Work is ongoing to restore the final unit, with authorities expressing optimism that the plant could return to full capacity by the end of the week.

Once fully restored, the Akosombo Plant is expected to significantly strengthen the national grid and improve overall power reliability amid rising demand.
