  • Announces May Day Football Gala to strengthen unity within NPP structures

The Ashanti Regional Organiser of the New Patriotic Party, Francis Adomako, has criticised the administration of John Dramani Mahama over ongoing power outages, popularly known as “dumsor,” accusing it of worsening economic hardship across the country.

Speaking to journalists ahead of the party’s maiden May Day Football Gala at the Serwaah Nyarko School Park in Kumasi, he said the persistent blackouts are destroying livelihoods and affecting both businesses and education.

He cited observations from visits to communities such as Asafo, Bantama, and Adum, where he said traders and small-scale operators were heavily impacted by unreliable electricity supply.

According to him, cold store operators have been forced to dispose of spoiled goods, while barbers, welders, and other artisans remain unable to work due to frequent outages. He described the situation as economically damaging for ordinary citizens.

Concerns about education

Adomako also raised concerns about the impact of the power crisis on students preparing for major examinations, including the BECE and WASSCE. He argued that inconsistent electricity supply disrupts evening study sessions, potentially affecting academic performance.

He insisted that accountability for any decline in exam results should be directed at the government in power.

May Day Gala to promote unity

Shifting focus to party activities, Adomako announced plans for the upcoming May Day Football Gala, describing it as a unifying event for members of the NPP in the Ashanti Region.

The tournament will bring together various party groups, including current and former appointees, former MPs, MMDCEs, TESCON members, and constituency executives.

He said the event is aimed at strengthening internal cohesion and promoting camaraderie within the party ahead of future political contests.

Competition and prizes

The gala will feature 16 teams drawn from different party structures, with matches organised across multiple categories.

Winners will receive a trophy, medals, and a cash prize, while runners-up will also be rewarded with medals and cash gifts.

The draw for the fixtures was conducted by former Ghana international footballer Seth Twumasi, who also serves as a vice chairperson of the NPP in the constituency.
