Mali’s Defence Minister, General Sadio Camara, has reportedly been killed during a series of coordinated attacks on military installations across the country, according to sources.

The attacks, which took place on Sunday, came a day after Camara’s residence in the garrison town of Kati was targeted in simultaneous assaults allegedly carried out by an al-Qaeda-linked group and Tuareg rebel fighters.

Camara was a key figure in Mali’s military leadership following the coups in 2020 and 2021, which brought the current ruling junta to power. Analysts say he was widely regarded as one of the most influential personalities within the administration and even viewed by some as a potential future leader of the country.

His reported death has been described as a significant setback for Mali’s armed forces.

According to Al Jazeera correspondent Nicolas Haque, attackers launched a suicide car bomb on Camara’s heavily fortified residence in Kati, a military town located about 15km from the capital, Bamako, where Interim President Assimi Goïta also resides. Despite the attack, Goïta was reportedly moved to a secure location and remains safe and in command of the military leadership.

The coordinated assault extended beyond Kati, with gunmen striking multiple sites including Bamako, Gao, Kidal, and the central city of Sévaré. Residents in Kidal reported ongoing heavy gunfire and explosions more than 24 hours after the attacks began.

Security analyst Bulama Bukarti noted that the situation could escalate further, warning of potential new battles as rival armed groups appear to have united against state forces. He explained that factions previously in conflict have now formed a tactical alliance to challenge the Malian government.

International bodies, including the African Union, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and the United States Bureau of African Affairs, have all condemned the attacks.
