PAC Deepens Scrutiny of Public Funds as Ashanti Zonal Hearings on 2024 Audit Report Continue

- PAC reviews findings in the 2024 Auditor-General’s Report during Ashanti zonal hearings.
- MMDAs including Wenchi Municipal Assembly and Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly appear to respond to audit queries.
- Hearings aim to strengthen financial discipline and public sector accountability.
The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament has entered Day 2 of its second zonal public hearing in the Ashanti Region, as it intensifies scrutiny of findings contained in the 2024 Auditor-General’s Report.
The ongoing hearings are focused on Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), as well as public basic and secondary schools, with the aim of addressing financial irregularities and reinforcing accountability in the management of public funds. The exercise forms part of Parliament’s broader oversight responsibility to ensure transparency and prudent use of state resources.

On Day 2, officials from the Wenchi Municipal Assembly, including the Municipal Chief Executive and internal auditors, appeared before the committee to respond to audit queries and explain discrepancies identified in their financial operations. Their appearance marked another critical step in the committee’s effort to hold public officials accountable.
Representatives from various assemblies and heads of public institutions continue to take turns before the committee, providing explanations and justifications for issues raised in the Auditor-General’s report.

The hearings have brought to the fore concerns over compliance, financial discipline, and adherence to procurement and accounting regulations.
Executives from the Banda Municipal Assembly subsequently appeared before the committee, continuing the process of interrogation and clarification of audit findings.
Attention has now shifted to the host region, where several assemblies—including Adansi South District, Amansie West District, Bekwai Municipal, Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, and Kumawu District—have been invited to respond to audit concerns.

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, led by Mayor Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, has already appeared before the committee to address key financial issues and provide clarity on matters raised in the report.
The zonal hearings, currently underway in the Ashanti Region, are expected to continue through the week and conclude on Friday, as the committee pushes forward in its mandate to promote accountability, transparency, and effective public financial management across the country.
