  • Strict monitoring introduced to ensure proper use of funds.

The Ghana Education Service has approved the release of funds for the procurement of perishable food items in Senior High and Technical Schools (SHTSs) nationwide, in a move aimed at addressing recent feeding challenges.

Announced in a statement on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, the intervention is expected to ease the difficulties schools have faced in sourcing fresh food supplies such as vegetables, meat, and eggs. These challenges have been driven by rising market prices and disruptions in supply chains, which have strained the feeding component of the Free Senior High School programme.

According to the statement, signed by the Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi, the necessary administrative processes have already been activated to ensure that funds are disbursed promptly and fairly to beneficiary schools.

The funding is intended to support students’ nutritional needs while easing operational pressures on school authorities, who have in recent weeks raised concerns through bodies such as the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools.

GES emphasised that strict accountability measures will guide the use of the funds. School authorities have been directed to apply the money exclusively for its intended purpose, with monitoring systems in place to track spending and prevent misuse. Auditors and regional officials are expected to oversee the process to ensure compliance.

The move is seen as a timely intervention to reduce tensions between school administrators and education authorities, while restoring stability to school feeding arrangements.

GES further assured parents and the public of its continued commitment to student welfare and improving educational outcomes, expressing confidence that the release of funds will help sustain feeding programmes and prevent disruptions to learning.

With the disbursement underway, stakeholders are hopeful that the measure will bring lasting relief to schools and ensure that students’ access to proper nutrition is maintained.
