Police Intensify Highway Security Measures After Fatal Attack on Football Team

The Ghana Police Service has announced plans to strengthen highway security following a deadly robbery attack in the Ashanti Region that claimed the life of Dominic Frimpong.
The Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Godwin Ahianyo, described the incident as tragic and assured the public that steps are being taken to prevent similar occurrences.
“We will engage relevant stakeholders to ensure such incidents do not happen again,” he stated.
Details of the Attack
According to police reports, the incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 12, along the Ahyiresu–KDS road in the Nyanahin District.
A team bus belonging to Berekum Chelsea, carrying about 30 players and officials, drove into an ongoing robbery mounted by six armed men who had blocked the road.
In an attempt to escape, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which veered off into a nearby bush. During the chaos, Dominic Frimpong was shot and later died at the Bibiani Government Hospital. Another passenger was reportedly robbed of GH¢4,500.
Ongoing Investigations
Police say two spent cartridges have been retrieved from the scene, and investigations are currently underway. No arrests have been made so far.
Senior officers, including the Regional and Operations Commanders, are actively on the ground, working with community members to gather intelligence and track down the perpetrators.
“Our crime scene experts are also assisting to ensure we collect the necessary evidence to support investigations,” DSP Ahianyo added.
Security Concerns Raised
The incident has sparked renewed concerns about safety on Ghana’s highways, particularly for sports teams and travellers moving at night.
DSP Ahianyo noted that discussions will be held regarding improved security arrangements, including possible protection measures for teams travelling after matches.
The tragic loss has sent shockwaves through the football community, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced safety measures on major roads across the country.
