VIP Jeoun Transport Raises Fares Effective Today, Blames Fuel and Maintenance Costs

Company cites worsening road conditions and operational pressures as justification for increase

Story Highlights
  • VIP Jeoun Transport increases fares effective April 8
  • Management cites fuel prices, spare parts, and maintenance costs
  • Longer travel times on Accra–Kumasi route driving expenses

Management of VIP Jeoun Transport has justified its decision to increase transport fares, attributing the move to rising fuel prices, maintenance costs, and operational challenges.

The company says it had maintained existing fares for months despite growing financial strain but could no longer absorb the increasing costs.

Why the Fare Increase?

Speaking to JoyNews on April 7, Managing Director Adakabre Frimpong Manso explained that VIP operates as a private limited liability company, independent of transport unions such as GPRTU and GRTCC.

“We make our own assessments. Where we believe we need to plug some holes, we have to plug them,” he stated.

According to him, deteriorating road conditions—especially along the busy Accra–Kumasi highway—have significantly increased costs.

Impact of Poor Road Conditions

The MD highlighted that journeys that should take six hours now stretch to up to ten hours, due to congestion and poor road networks at:

  • Osino
  • Nkawkaw
  • Konongo

These delays have resulted in:

  • Higher fuel consumption
  • Increased vehicle wear and tear
  • Rising maintenance expenses

“Taking depreciation into account, it is even somewhat cheaper,” he added.

Delayed Decision and Firm Stance

Mr. Manso revealed the company had initially planned to increase fares in March 2025, but postponed the move following discussions with government officials.

He also ruled out any immediate fare reductions:

“What in Ghana was 10 cedis two years ago that remains the same today?” he questioned.

Passenger Concerns

Despite the justification, some commuters say the increase comes at a difficult time, as households continue to grapple with high living costs.

Passengers acknowledge the operational challenges faced by transport operators but argue that frequent fare hikes are placing additional pressure on already strained budgets.

The new fare adjustment takes effect from April 8, with operators warning that unless fuel prices, road conditions, and maintenance costs improve, transport fares may remain elevated.
