OSP Faced “Worst Existential Challenges” in 2025 Despite Strong Performance – Agyebeng
Special Prosecutor cites political pressure despite strong anti-corruption performance

- Kissi Agyebeng says 2025 was both the OSP’s best and most difficult year.
- Political calls to scrap the Office of the Special Prosecutor intensified challenges.
- Civil society urged to support and protect the institution.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has described 2025 as its most difficult year in terms of institutional survival, even as it recorded significant operational achievements.
Speaking at a national dialogue, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng said the office delivered one of its strongest performances but simultaneously faced intense pressure that threatened its existence.
He attributed much of the difficulty to political calls for the office to be scrapped, noting that such challenges often arise from its mandate to investigate and prosecute corruption involving public officials.
Agyebeng questioned why the institution and its staff must continually defend its existence while carrying out its duties, describing the situation as an ongoing struggle to keep the office operational.
He also appealed to civil society organizations to actively support and protect the OSP, emphasizing that it is a critical institution that must be preserved for future generations.
The concerns come amid legislative efforts by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga and Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, who introduced a Private Member’s Bill seeking to repeal the law establishing the OSP.
The bill argued that the office’s operations have revealed structural and constitutional challenges, including overlaps with the Attorney-General’s Department, which have led to institutional tensions and delays in prosecutions.
However, John Dramani Mahama later intervened, requesting that the bill be put on hold.
Despite the challenges, Agyebeng maintained that the OSP remains committed to its mandate, calling for broader support to ensure its continued effectiveness.
