2,563 Public Workers Lose January Pay as Government Enforces Payroll Clean-Up
Controller and Accountant-General says salaries were suspended on the Auditor-General’s recommendation after a nationwide payroll verification

- The January 2026 salaries of 2,563 public sector workers were suspended for failing to participate in a mandatory nationwide headcount exercise
- The decision was taken on the advice of the Auditor-General as part of efforts to clean and verify the government payroll
- Affected workers must report to the Ghana Audit Service to verify their employment status before salary payments can resume
The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has withheld the January 2026 salaries of 2,563 public sector workers who failed to take part in a mandatory nationwide headcount exercise.
In a statement issued on Friday, January 30, 2026, and signed by the Head of Public Relations, Cephas Neosoo, the CAGD clarified that while most public servants have been paid, salaries for the affected individuals were suspended on the recommendation of the Auditor-General.
The headcount exercise, carried out across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in 2025, formed part of efforts to verify staff details and sanitise the government payroll. Workers who did not participate in the verification process have consequently had their salaries stopped.
The department has directed all affected employees to report to the Ghana Audit Service without delay to confirm their employment status and complete the necessary clearance procedures. Salary payments will only resume after the verification process is concluded.
Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and accountability in public financial management, the CAGD assured the public that the payroll clean-up exercise is intended to protect state resources and ensure that only duly verified workers receive government salaries.
