A 35-year-old nursing mother and seamstress has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service in the Bole District for allegedly inflicting blade wounds and applying pepper to a five-year-old girl under her care at Bole Mempeasem.

The disturbing incident reportedly came to light on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, after the Assembly Member for the Mempeasem Electoral Area, Hassan Abu Peace Brother, discovered the injured child behind his residence around 7:00 p.m.

According to him, efforts to trace the child’s family revealed that the girl only identified her mother as “mama,” prompting further inquiries into her guardianship.

The Assemblyman said he had previously been informed that the suspect frequently beat the child and had intervened, warning her against harming the girl. However, he said he received a shocking call the following morning alleging that the child had been severely assaulted.

He further disclosed that the child was allegedly beaten overnight and later sent to school despite sustaining injuries, including blade wounds.

Following the report, the Assemblyman alerted the police and social welfare authorities, who later invited the suspect to the school premises, where she was arrested upon arrival.

The Assemblyman has since urged parents to be cautious when entrusting children to caregivers, stressing the need for stronger child protection.

The suspect, identified as Marijana Alhassan, however denied the allegations during questioning at the Bole District Police Station. Speaking in Waala, she stated that the victim is not her biological daughter but her husband’s relative who stays with them occasionally.

She claimed the child was highly dependent and difficult to care for, adding that in frustration she only pushed her away, causing her to fall onto a mopping stick, which allegedly led to the injuries. She further said she later dressed the child and sent her to school before being arrested.

Marijana Alhassan is currently in custody and is expected to appear before the Bole District Magistrate Court on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, social welfare officials are monitoring the child’s condition as she continues to receive medical care at the Bole District Government Hospital.
