Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, has issued a heartfelt apology to the party’s National Council for going against its directive to boycott a parliamentary rerun held in 19 polling stations.

Speaking after the party’s National Council meeting on Monday, July 14—convened ahead of their annual delegates conference—Afriyie acknowledged her misstep and reiterated her commitment to the NPP.

“It all comes down to an apology. This is my party, and I’ll always remain NPP. Everyone makes mistakes. The matter has been resolved, I’ve apologised, and we’re moving forward,” she said.

Her apology stems from her decision to participate in the parliamentary rerun on July 11, 2025, despite the party’s clear stance not to engage. The NPP had objected to the Electoral Commission’s call for a rerun, arguing that Afriyie had already secured victory in the December 2024 elections, a claim supported by polling agents and EC officials.

At a July 8 press briefing, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong accused the EC of undermining electoral integrity by ordering a rerun. According to the EC, however, the decision was necessitated by anomalies in the collation process—specifically, missing validation signatures on some pink sheets from affected polling stations.

Despite the boycott, Afriyie participated but narrowly lost to the NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn, who garnered 34,090 votes against Afriyie’s 33,881—marking a significant and historic win for the opposition in the constituency.
