- Says constituents expect him to complete “unfinished business”
- Emphasises due process to avoid legal challenges
The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Samuel Nartey George, has reiterated his determination to push for the passage of the anti-LGBTQI bill, stating that his constituents have renewed his mandate to see the legislation through.
Speaking during a stakeholder engagement organised by Parliament’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, Mr George said his return to Parliament was driven by what he described as “unfinished business” from the previous legislative term.
He explained that the bill, which he co-sponsors, has been reintroduced and is currently undergoing the necessary parliamentary procedures. According to him, the legislation has already been subjected to extensive review over several years, including detailed consideration at both committee level and in plenary.
Mr George recalled that the bill was unanimously passed by Parliament on February 28, 2024, describing it as a significant milestone. He also suggested that Ghana’s efforts have influenced similar legislative actions in other African countries, citing developments in Uganda and Senegal.
Despite his strong support for the bill, the lawmaker stressed the importance of adhering strictly to due process to avoid legal challenges. He noted that the bill previously faced multiple court actions but withstood them due to the thorough procedures followed during its passage.
He cautioned against rushing the process, warning that any procedural lapses could expose the legislation to future legal setbacks after passage.
Mr George emphasised that while there is a desire for swift progress, Parliament must ensure that every step is properly followed to safeguard the bill’s legitimacy.
