The Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore and Ranking Member of Parliament’s Health Committee, Hon. Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, has secured police enquiry bail for NPP activist Efya Royal, following her arrest over an alleged social media-related offence.
Efya Royal was reportedly arrested by the Police on suspicion of sharing a post originally made by popular TikToker Ghana Jollof.
Her whereabouts had reportedly remained unknown over the weekend after she was taken into custody, prompting concern among friends, supporters and members of the public. The matter subsequently gained attention on social media, after which the Police confirmed that she had been arrested.
Dr. Ayew Afriye intervened on her behalf, resulting in her being granted police enquiry bail of GH¢20,000.
The circumstances surrounding her arrest and detention have attracted criticism from some quarters, with concerns raised about the protection of individual rights in the handling of such cases.
The MP’s intervention has also been welcomed by supporters of the NPP, many of whom have commended him for what they describe as his continued support for young members and activists of the party.
Efya Royal is expected to cooperate with the Police as investigations into the matter continue.
