Kwabre East MP to Support 1,000 SHS Freshers with Educational Materials; 22 Top Students to Receive Full Sponsorship Package

The Member of Parliament for Kwabre East Constituency, Hon. Akwasi Gyamfi Onyina Acheampong, has announced an ambitious educational support programme aimed at giving 1,000 newly admitted Senior High School (SHS) students in the constituency a strong start to their education.

Speaking in an interview with Kwame Tanko on the Ghana Se Sen Show on Lawson TV/Radio, the MP disclosed that the initiative will be officially presented to beneficiaries tomorrow.

According to him, the Kwabre East constituency recorded an impressive performance in the recent Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), with more than 7,000 candidates sitting for the examination and a pass rate of approximately 90 per cent.

As part of his support, Hon. Acheampong said 1,000 fresh SHS students from the constituency will receive educational items, including exercise books, calculators and school bags.

The initiative will also recognise the best-performing students among the beneficiaries. The top 22 students out of the 1,000 selected beneficiaries will receive a special package from the MP, which will include sponsorship towards their education.

He stressed that the selection process will be conducted by an independent body to ensure fairness, transparency and the elimination of political or personal bias.

Why Human Capital Development?

Explaining the motivation behind the initiative, the Kwabre East MP said his decision was influenced by the limited allocation for human development under the District Assemblies Common Fund compared with physical infrastructure.

He noted that the guidelines provide allocations for areas such as legacy projects, markets, hospitals and boreholes, which largely involve physical infrastructure.

Hon. Acheampong said he therefore decided to channel part of his Common Fund allocation towards human capital development, believing that investing in people can create a lasting impact on the lives of constituents.

“My main motivation is to build the people of Kwabre East and give the younger generation a start,” he said.

The MP explained that supporting students at the beginning of their SHS journey could help remove some of the financial difficulties families face and give young people a better opportunity to pursue their education.

Encouragement for BECE Candidates

Hon. Acheampong also had words of encouragement for students who did not obtain the BECE results or school placements they had hoped for.

He urged such students not to consider failure as the end of their lives, stressing that setbacks should instead serve as an opportunity to regroup and try again.

He encouraged unsuccessful candidates to pick themselves up and take advantage of opportunities available to rewrite the examination, particularly with provisions for BECE resits.

GES Releases 2026/2027 SHS Academic Calendar

Meanwhile, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has released the official academic calendar for Senior High Schools (SHSs) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTSs) for the 2026/2027 academic year.

The calendar, issued by the GES Public Relations Unit on June 1, 2026, covers schools operating under the single-track system as well as transitional schools.

Under the schedule, Form One and Form Two students in single-track schools will begin the first semester on September 18, 2026, and remain in school until January 29, 2027.

They will proceed on vacation from January 30 to March 29, 2027, before returning for the second semester on March 30, 2027. The second semester will end on July 30, 2027, with vacation beginning on July 31.

For Form Three students, the first semester will run from September 18 to December 18, 2026. They will break for vacation from December 19, 2026, to January 31, 2027, and return for the second semester on February 1, 2027.

Form Three students will remain in school until June 18, 2027, which will mark the end of their academic year.
