The Bono East Regional Office of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has urged consumers to use standard and approved materials when connecting their homes and properties to utility services.

According to the Regional Manager, Cassiel Eghan Asiedu, the use of substandard materials can lead to severe safety risks, including fire outbreaks that endanger lives and property.

He gave the advice during a public education programme held at Jema in the Kintampo South District.

Mr Asiedu explained that although inferior materials may appear cheaper, they often result in greater costs and dangers in the long term.

“We have witnessed several fire incidents that destroyed lives and properties, only to discover that inferior materials were used for the installations,” he stated.

He further warned that some individuals continue to sell unapproved electrical materials to unsuspecting consumers, taking advantage of lower prices to attract buyers.

The PURC official therefore encouraged consumers to engage directly with recognised utility providers and report any difficulties encountered during utility connection processes to the Commission.

Speaking on the Commission’s activities in 2025, Mr Asiedu disclosed that the Bono East office facilitated credit adjustments amounting to GH¢115,153.97 for customers who reported irregularities in their electricity bills.

He added that the Commission also helped recover GH¢21,991.47 in favour of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).
