The Ghana Police Service has arrested four suspected robbery gang members in Bolgatanga following an intelligence-led operation that led to the recovery of an AK47 rifle and 87 rounds of live ammunition.

The suspects were identified as Abdulai Ibrahim, Amadu Rahman, Amadu Sulemana, and Adu Yakubu. They were arrested on Tuesday, May 5.

According to a police statement shared on May 6, investigations revealed that the suspects assembled at Gbane, a mining community in the Talensi District, after travelling from Yagaba and Fumbisi to allegedly carry out robbery activities.

Police said the gang reportedly stole four motorbikes and several mobile phones during the operation.

During interrogation, the suspects allegedly admitted to participating in multiple robbery attacks within the Talensi District and along the Yagaba-Fumbisi and Yagaba-Nanguruma roads in the North East Region.

Investigators also linked the group to the robbery attack on the Vikandi Phone Shop in Bolgatanga on March 22, 2025, an incident that gained public attention after a viral video showed armed men carrying an AK47 rifle.

The police further stated that the suspects were connected to robbery attacks at mining sites in Gbane, where victims were reportedly robbed of gold and large amounts of cash.

According to the statement, the suspects later guided investigators to a farm near Biung, close to Gbane, where the alleged gang leader, Amadu Rahman, had hidden an AK47 rifle.

A search at the location led to the retrieval of the rifle, bearing serial number 68100563, along with 87 rounds of live ammunition concealed in a fertiliser sack.

Police said Amadu Rahman collapsed during the recovery operation and was rushed to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has since been deposited at the hospital morgue pending an autopsy.

The remaining three suspects remain in police custody and are expected to be arraigned before court.
